Super Short Stories – Berries of Summer

She lies under the bush, plucking berries from its supple branches and popping them in her mouth one by one. She barely notices their effects until she goes to reach for another, but her arm refuses to move. She tries to look down at herself, but her neck won’t budge. She tries to scream, but only a dull croak passes her lips.

This Way Darkness by Latashia Figueroa

DarkPath

EXCERPT FROM WRAPPED IN SMALL FLESH AND BONE, from the short

stories collection, THIS WAY DARKNESS by Latashia Figueroa

Linda pretended not to notice these things. But the day I found my wife hiding

from Jenny under the kitchen sink, shaking uncontrollably, I knew she could pretend no

longer.

They had been playing hide-and-seek. When Linda hid in a closet, she heard

Jenny call her as she searched the house but her voice was not her own. Linda described

the voice as something not human. She spent the rest of the day hiding from our child

until I came home.

We sent Jenny to a doctor, a specialist. His findings: there was absolutely nothing

wrong with our child. She was extremely intelligent and that was the probable cause for

her acting out. In short, with all his degrees and years of study, the only diagnosis the

doctor could come up with was “She’s bored.”

I would not allow Linda to be alone with Jenny again. I worked from home.

Linda was a nervous wreck and the child knew we feared her.

We began to lock our bedroom door. Linda held me so tight I thought my ribs

would crack. She jumped at every little sound and, to be fair, so did I.

We could hear Jenny’s bedroom door open; the pitter patter of her tiny feet

running across the hardwood floor. We could hear her breathing heavy, right outside

our door. The doorknob would often turn. And then we could hear her run away, her

bedroom door closing gently.

It was all too much for my Linda. She cried herself to sleep nearly every night.

“This is my fault, Robert. I’m sorry, I’m so sorry.”

I tried soothing her. I stroked Linda’s hair the way she liked until I could feel her

body finally relax in my arms.

“She’s going to kill us,” Linda said before she drifted into sleep.

I got up at 4:30 this morning and published a book. What did you do today?

Yes. You read that title right. I was up at 4:30 this morning, and I used that extra hour and a half to publish a book I’ve been working hard to finish. I apologize if that makes you feel a bit less productive. To be honest, I hadn’t planned on getting up any earlier than normal. I had planned on waiting until tonight to publish this bad boy, but I woke up and couldn’t get back to sleep. Whether that was due to anticipation or my wife’s snoring I dare not hazard a guess. In lieu of sleep, I decided to be productive and push this project past the finish line.

And now, the great reveal… Say hello to my little friend:

100-cover

100 stories.
100 words each.
Tiny snippets of terror for your consumption.

Take them in one at a time and savor the twisted flavor of death and destruction, or devour them all in one sitting–a nonstop feast of terrifying creatures and horrible happenings. The choice is yours, as will be the fear.

You may want to sleep with the light on.

Click here to buy the kindle edition!

About 30-35 of the stories have appeared on my blog. I lost count in the editing process where stories were removed and replaced with others. The rest of the stories are new. You’ve never seen them, but I’m certain you’ll love them. Well, I’m hoping you’ll love them anyway. If you don’t you should probably get your noggin examined as a precaution. It might be broken.

Now, be a good little minion and snag your copy today… or hold out for the print version. If all goes according to plan it should be available in a few days. Even better yet, be the first of your friends to procure both a digital AND a print edition!

A joking aside, I’d really appreciate if you guys and gals would spread the word about this newest collection of disturbing words from yours truly. Maybe throw a tweet my way (@AdamIckes–follow me while you’re at it), reblog this post, share a link on Facebook, like and share my Facebook page. Anything would be seriously appreciated, and I’d be happy to return the favor if and when you need it. Just say the word, for you are not only my minion, but I am yours as well. We’re all in this together.

Warm regards to the lot of you. Keep on writing, friends.

Six on the 6th – December

I’ve decided to make a habit of writing a handful of six word stories each month and unleash them on the public. What better day than the 6th for such an event. Even if you aren’t a writer, this is a fun little excersize to get the creative juices flowing. You should give it a shot. You may surprise yourself.

The Day After

Sunrise unveiled the dead planet.

Belief

Chin lifted, eyes skyward, she prayed.

The Handwritten Note

Waited as long as I could!

Runaway

I don’t remember why I left.

The Hunter

Exhausted and satisfied, the beast collapsed.

The Proposal

On bended knee, the ring sparkled.

Your turn… Give me your best six word stories. Or at least let me know which is your favorite. I personally like The Handwritten Note. There are so many possible backstories to that note it sends my mind in a million directions creating elaborate tales that eventually led to the note.
