Seeing Things

Daryl’s eyelids drooped as he looked out the window. After a few minutes of watching the ground flow passed like water, something green on the wing drew his attention. He rubbed his eyes and leaned closer to the glass.

The gremlin staring back at him cocked its head and grinned, its wide mouth full of too many teeth. He closed his eyes and looked away. When he looked back, the creature was gone.

He laughed and tipped his chair back to get some much needed rest.

Outside-hidden beneath the wing-the gremlin pried a rivet free from the engine.

This story was written for Friday Fictioneers. My original thought was a treasure hunt because of the X on the ground. Second thought was a sniper taking an impossible shot from a moving plane. Finally I settled on the classic gremlin on the wing of the plane. Poor Daryl thinks he’s hallucinating.

Movie of the Week: The Evil Dead (1981)

It’s no secret that “The Evil Dead” is one of my favorite horror movies of all time. I love the entire trilogy actually, but I’ve not seen the newest incarnation. I don’t know if I want to. I’m afraid it might ruin the entire thing for me somehow if I don’t enjoy it so I’ve been putting it off.

Regardless, I’ve decided to start something new and share horror movies I enjoy with you wonderful minions. 100% free of charge for you to take some time out of your busy schedules to enjoy. “The Evil Dead” was an obvious choice for my first journey into this wonderful new territory.

If you’ve not seen it then it is mandatory that you watch. No excuse will be acceptable in this regard, minion. Punishment will be swift and harsh for those who do not abide by this decree. Ok, maybe not, but you really should watch it. I think you’ll love it.

Enjoy!

Changes

I’ve made some changes that you may or may not have noticed. Ok, let’s be serious. You didn’t notice unless you’ve been watching me like a hawk, and you haven’t. Shame on you for not stalking me. Get your head in the game, minion!

First: I finally got around to registering my domain. This site is now officially AdamIckes.com. With that change came a few other corresponding changes. I created a static landing page with links to all of my releases and a brief bio. It still needs some tweaking (adding social media links for example), but I like it. That being said I added a separate “Blog” page that handles displaying all new posts. You can access it from the menu at the top of the page or by visiting adamickes.com/blog. If any of you wants to do something similar but aren’t sure how, just ask. I’d be more than happy to guide you through it.

Second: Zombie Tree, Socks, and 100 tiny tales of terror are all on Smashwords now. Zombie Tree and Socks were there before, but I took them down to try out KDP Select. It wasn’t really worth it so they’re back on Smashwords now. 100 tiny tales of terror is a new addition to the Smashwords catalog.

Third: They will all be on Barnes & Noble as well for you folks with a Nook who don’t like going through Smashwords. Zombie Tree and Socks already are. They were in the same boat as Smashwords. They were taken down to try KDP Select. 100 tiny tales of terror is still processing. It’s supposed to be finished within 72 hours, but who knows when it’ll actually be done. Here’s hoping sooner rather than later.

What do you minions think of the changes? Am I taking things in the right direction? Any suggestions for additional changes?

Chopping Wood

The blade of the ax bit into the tree stump. The wood was shredded from many previous anger management sessions, but it still got the job done. He knew he’d have to cut another tree down to replenish his stock of firewood soon anyway. Then he’d have a brand new stump on which to take out his aggression.

Memories of her packing lingered in his mind. She’d left her key on the kitchen counter. He pictured her with Kurt and snarled. Fingers clenched around the ax handle, he looked over his shoulder at his truck then back at the ax.

This story was written for Friday Fictioneers. The connection to the prompt photo is loose at best. The word ‘chop’ stuck in my head and I ran with it. I hope you enjoyed the result.

Storybook Corner Prompt - July

ogre-castle-words

Welcome to Storybook Corner, a monthly flash fiction prompt held on the 21st of each and every month. This post will give you this month’s prompt.

Your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to write a story based on the prompt below.

The goal is to end up with a story with a beginning, middle, and end that falls anywhere between 300 and 500 words in length.

Make every word count, but don’t fret too much if you can’t hit the word count. Sometimes stories refuse to be constrained. Sometimes those are the only stories worth telling.

Try to read as many of the other stories as you can in the time you have available. We all work hard on our stories and like to share our work with as many readers as possible.

This month’s prompt will be the following image:

There used to be a building around this fireplace/chimney, but it’s long gone. This is all that’s left.

Happy writing, minions.
