I’ve decided to join in the fun of Sunday Photo Fiction. I know it’s Monday. I beg your forgiveness. I’ll try harder next week.
Drool trickled from the side of Kevin’s mouth, soaking his pillow. His arm dangled from the bed. The Legends of King Arthur and His Knights lay open, just beyond his finger tips.
The rattle of chainmail roused him from his slumber. He lifted his head and gazed around the room, still half asleep. “Who’s there?”
His blurred vision began to focus on three humanoid figures deep in the shadows of the furthest corner. “Very funny, Lee.”
The trio of knights stepped forward and began to take shape. Their face shields were raised, the night light revealing empty canvasses of skin where their faces should have been.
Kevin screamed and fell off the side of his bed. His slobber soaked face landed on the open book. He grabbed it and flung it at the figures. After passing through the faceless knights, it thumped closed against the wall and dropped behind his dresser. The three knights disappeared the instant the book slammed closed.
He never bothered fishing it out, didn’t even touch another book for the next dozen or so years.
