Let’s talk holidays, shall we? As you may or may not have guessed from my love of horror, my favorite holiday is by far Halloween. Though, this year my daughter’s birthday falls on Thanksgiving, so that one will be pretty good as well. And then there is Christmas, which she will be at a great age for, so that’ll be awesome this year too. Still, I’d like to focus on Halloween for the purposes of this post.
Yes, yes, I know it’s still summer and I’m loving summer, but there are only three months until Halloween. I’ve spent the last nine months debating on a costume for the annual Halloween party and I think I’ve finally come up with something great.
I’m going to be Ash Williams this year. If you don’t know who that is, you should feel complete and utter shame. Ash Williams is the protagonist of the Evil Dead Trilogy movies (Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2, and Army of Darkness). Hang your head in shame and pout for not knowing that. Or go watch all three movies immediately. Go on. Do it already. I’ll wait here until you’re done. Though they may have had some scare value back in their day, they really aren’t that frightening by today’s standards and they have a nice dose of comedy thrown in by the brilliant Bruce Campbell. Yes, that’s the guy who plays Sam in USA’s Burn Notice.
So how am I going to go about creating this costume modeled after the king of all B-movie badasses?
I’m glad you asked! Here’s my plan:
Step 1: Buy a blue long sleeved dress shirt and dark brown pants at Goodwill/Salvation Army. Buying cheap, used clothing is essential due to the next step.
Step 2: Rip, tear, and cut the clothing as necessary. Roll them around in a bit of dirt. Add some fake blood. Basically, make sure they’re nice and beat up looking without making them stinky and nasty.
Step 3: Buy a couple boards and a bit of hardware from Lowes. Nothing special, the cheap stuff will work just fine.
Step 4: This is the fun part. I get to play with my wide assortment of my power tools (table saw, miter saw, jig saw, router, drill, etc, etc, etc.) to turn the pile of miscellaneous parts from Lowes into a chainsaw and a “boomstick”.
Step 5: Sand, spray paint, and stain my homemade “weapons” until I’m satisfied with their look.
Step 6: Forge something from a few old belt’s to make the sling strap for the boomstick.
Don’t worry, I’ll probably post photos when I’m done, of the chainsaw and boomstick anyway. I’m not promising any photos of me dressed as Ash. Don’t expect any photos anytime soon though. This will take awhile to complete. That’s why I have to start 3 months in advance.
Wish me luck!
I guess this begs the question: What will you be doing for Halloween?
