The Fishing Trip

“Careful, boy. There’s a snake down there.”

Gavin peered over the edge of the dock. “That ain’t a snake, Pa.”

“You callin’ me stupid? Think I don’t know no snake when I see one?”

Gavin shook his head. “No, sir.”

“If it ain’t no snake what is it, Mr. Smarty-pants?”

Gavin shrugged. “Piece of a car-exhaust, maybe?”

“I’m so dumb I don’t know a snake from a piece of scrap metal? That it?”

Gavin looked down. “No, sir.”

His father’s palm connected with his cheek-hard enough to split his lip.

Gavin didn’t dare look up. He knew better.

Life’s Greatest Regret

PHOTO PROMPT © Ron Pruitt

“Me first,” the old man shouted as he pushed through the crowd. His words reminded me of my daughter. She’d always had to be first, like most kids.

I stood there watching-just watching-as the old man struggled with the high step onto the bus. No one bothered helping him.

I allowed my thoughts to wander. I thought of my little girl, of what I was leaving behind.

I looked at my suitcase, and thought of my wife. We tried. We really did, but we couldn’t make it work.

I got on the bus. Looking back, I wish I hadn’t.

This one is a bit outside of my usual, but I like it. I think there’s an overwhelming sadness to it, which is like a second cousin of horror. Or something like that anyway.

Halloween is almost here…

And this year is going to be extra awesome. Do you know why? DO YOU?

If you know anything about me, you know that I’m a big fan of Evil Dead. My sixth on the sixth logo even pays homage to it for crying out loud. And if you’re a fan of Evil Dead you know that this Halloween is the launch date for a new series on the Starz channel-a little something known as Ash vs Evil Dead. And it stars Bruce Campbell and that is just groovy as hell in my book.

Have a look-see at the trailer and bask in how epic this Halloween is going to be.

If you don’t have Starz, get it. Period.

Also, let the boomstick do the talkin’.

Friday Fictioneers - Taken

Her heels clicked on the pavement as she walked toward the small U-Haul trailer. She looked at the hastily scrawled note in her hand: There is a trailer in the lot of the Budget Inn. You will find her there.

She wasn’t surprised to find the padlock on the trailer hanging open. Her hands shook as she reached for the lock. She shouldn’t have come alone, but the lure of finding her little girl had been too strong.

“She’s alive,” she whispered to herself over and over as she lifted the gate, hoping she wouldn’t find her worst fear inside.

Super Short Stories - Summer Camp

I beat him to a bloody pulp with a tree branch. I probably would have killed him if the others hadn’t stopped me. That was my first and last experience at a summer camp.
