It’s ‘spohsed to be that way

If you saw my last post (Creative Endeavors), you know I’ve been obsessed with my little clay workings lately in favor of my writing, though I am still trying to write a bit. Well if you saw that post and you want a little update you came to the right place. This is where I’m at now: (click on the photo for a larger view if you’re interested)

I added a nose because my 2 year old told me it needed one, and she was right. It looks a lot better with a nose. And I’m out of clay again, so until I get some more it’s back to writing I go.

Anyway, on to the Friday Fictioneers story for this week, Thanks Rochelle for hosting and you all for reading.

Comments, criticism, and half drunken rants are mandatory this week. You’ll receive a failing grade otherwise.

It’s ‘spohsed to be that way.

“Daddy?”

“Yes, darling?”

“What’s a spohs?”

“Spohs?”

Lilah pointed at the word emblazened on the glass above the door. “Spohs. Right there.”

“It says shops.”

“Does not. It says spohs. I can read. Remember?”

“Yes, Lilah. I know. From outside it says shops. It’s backwards because you’re inside.”

“Why?”

“That’s how backwards works.”

“Why?”

“Science says so.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know, dear. Why don’t you tell me why you think you can see it backwards from inside?”

“‘Cause the wall is see through.”

“Bingo. How’d you get so smart?”

“Mommy says I’m telligent.”

“Intelligent.”

“I’m pretty sure it’s telligent, Daddy.”

Creative Endeavors

So I’ve been neglecting my writing this week because I’ve been focusing most of my creative juices into a different form of expression: sculpture. I’ve only ever sculpted once before and the clay I was using sucked so I didn’t get too detailed with it. The process is slow going as I have no experience and I’m just figuring things out as I go, but so far I’m liking the results. There is a long way to go yet, but I figured I’d share my progress.

This is the general idea behind the current sculpt. I’ve got a few little books where I draw a bunch of pictures like this. I draw them for character ideas, sculpture ideas (I’ve wanted to get into it for awhile but just haven’t had time) or just for plain fun.

I went to Hobby Lobby and got a foam head and some clay, then built a base for my foam head from some scrap wood I had.

The next step was to rough out the head. This is where I was when I got to the end of my 1st 4.5 lb block of clay. 40% off coupons are awesome by the way, I highly suggest using them. I covered the front of the foam head with clay and roughed out half the face based on my drawing.

So I went back to Hobby Lobby to get more clay but they didn’t have any more 4.5 lb blocks in the right color so I grabbed two 1 lb blocks to hold me over. Those extra 2 lbs allowed me to rough out the other half of the face and add one of the roughed out ears.

I went back a couple days later (which happened to be on my birthday) after I got a haircut (which is in the same shopping plaza as Hobby Lobby, so I was already there anyway) hoping they had some more 4.5 lb blocks in stock. Turns out they did so I snagged one (with 40% off coupon of course). I roughed out the other ear and adjusted the bone structure of the circles on forehead. They were too high before so I ripped them off and moved them down. I also covered the back of the head and in this photo I had just started to rough out one of the eyes.

This is where I currently stand. I added more detail to the eyes, the brows, the mouth, and one of the ears. My hands hurt so I’m done for now. I still have about 2 lbs of clay left but I want to pick up another 4.5 lb block so I can rough out the neck. This stuff never dries out because it’s oil based so I can reuse it to my heart’s content as long as I keep it clean so I shouldn’t have to keep going back to buy more clay for the next sculpt. But that’s a future discussion. There is still a ton of work to do on this guy so I’ll worry about that later.

If you’re wondering I’ve been calling this little goblin Luka. That’s all I really know about him so far. He hasn’t told me his back story yet.

The Dare

I’ve nothing to say other than Charlie got what he deserved.

Thanks to Rochelle for hosting and everyone else for reading. Oh and feel free to use my little Friday Fictioneers Badge at the bottom if you want. I made it to put on all my FF stories.

As always: comments, criticism, and half drunken rants (especially half drunken rants) are highly encouraged.

The Dare

(100 words)

“They’re coming,” Randy whispered down the stairs. “Get ready.”

Charlie crouched beside the door and waited patiently for the others to enter the decrepit church.

Leon and Kyle stopped just outside.

“Can’t we just say we went in?”

“We gotta take something from inside. You know that.”

Leon groaned.

Kyle lifted his heavy boot and planted it beside the doorknob. The rotted wood gave way easily and the door shot open.

The knob smashed into Charlie’s ribs and a pained howl erupted from his mouth. Leon and Kyle ran away screaming for their lives, sure they’d angered the ghosts inside.

Reunion

I struggled with this one again, but on the plus side I wrote about 5K words total on 2 other stories this week, one seems to be the beginnings of a novel (though time will tell in the end) and the other is just a longer short story that will likely end up about 10K words total. 5000 words may not be much, but it’s better than nothing and not bad for being out of the game for 9 months.

Anyway, Friday Fictioneers story time. Thanks to Rochelle for hosting and you all for reading. Honestly, I’m not sure if this is supposed to be happy, sad, or both. You’ll understand what I mean after you read it.

Though not always specifically called out: comments, criticism, and/or half drunken rants are always encouraged.

Reunion

(100 words)

The scattered leaves reminded her of a time long gone, of love long lost. She kicked at the leaves with fond memories dancing through her head. The desire to return to those days was squelched by the reality that’d she’d never see him again, not in this life.

A single teardrop tiptoed down her cheek and plummeted to join the ballet of swirling leaves below. She closed her eyes and let his memory carry her away.

The squealing of tires ripped at the air. A smash. Splintering. Silence. She turned to see the tree, eager to take her to him.

Troubling Thoughts

I must admit, I struggled with this one. I had to write three different stories before I had one I didn’t actively dislike. The first story was boring. As for the second, I liked the idea but 100 words turned out to be too limiting and the story just didn’t flow well after it had been edited down. I’m not saying I’m 100% in love with this third attempt, but it’s better than the others. For some reason though, the people had the same names in all stories, though not always specifically mentioned. They are Charlie and Mary. Charlie wasn’t even part of the second story, but he was still Charlie. I didn’t use Mary’s name in this story, but it is her name nonetheless. Anyway, let’s get down to business.

Here’s the prompt from Rochelle and my story follows:

Troubling Thoughts

Bet she doesn’t even notice me, thought Charlie. Of course she doesn’t, why would a girl like her notice a guy like me?

“Pardon me?”

She’d probably think you’re a loser anyway. Everyone else does. Lost in thought, the woman’s inquiry went unheeded. His hand gripped the piano wire in his pocket.

“Pardon me?” she repeated.

He turned toward her intoxicating smile. “Yes?”

“Happen to have the time?”

Charlie looked at his watch. “3:38”

“Thanks, cutie.”

The woman crossed the street and Charlie’s grip on the wire loosened. For the first time in a long time, his smile was genuine.
