Wow, I just realized it was Friday. Having the day off from work must have thrown my system out of whack. So, better late than never (though still on Friday), here is my offering for the Friday Fictioneers, hosted by Madison Woods.
As always comments, criticism, and half drunken rants are encouraged.
Water
It was in the water.
Tainted water was our downfall. How funny is that?
We never even saw it coming. We’d always assumed they’d come in peace; either that or in a war of epic proportions. Not the case.
We didn’t even know they existed until we started dying off. The virus doesn’t discriminate. Young, old, rich, poor; doesn’t matter. We fell like dominos, not in the hellfire of battle, but with a fizzling whimper.
When we realized what they’d done, it was already too late. We’d already drunk the Koolaid.
Only a handful of us remain- fewer every day.

The good old viral apocalypse, brought to you by aliens. I didn’t get time to write this week as I was on camp but good to see you’ve written no matter how late.
July 28th, 2012 at 7:39 AM
Truth be told, I wrote this on Thursday, I just forgot to schedule the post and by the time I realized it, Friday was nearly over. Oh well, it happens. Hope to see you back with a story next week.

good Jonestown reference…. this could be the start of something…
July 28th, 2012 at 7:41 AM
It could be indeed, but it’ll have to wait. I’ve already got too many other somethings going on at the moment.
July 28th, 2012 at 7:45 AM
you’ve piqued my interest…. liked it
July 27th, 2012 at 10:23 PM
Wow, and wow. Water may never taste the same again! Nicely done.
July 28th, 2012 at 7:42 AM
Thanks! I’m glad to have ruined water for you. Must mean I’m doing something right.
July 27th, 2012 at 10:26 PM
Love the Kool-Aid line. Didn’t see that coming. You have a gift for the macabre that really works, Adam.

Thanks, Rochelle. Glad you enjoyed it. The Kool-Aid line was one of the first I came up with for this one, I built the rest of the story around that one line.
July 28th, 2012 at 7:47 AM
Dontcha love it when that happens?
July 27th, 2012 at 10:48 PM
I am never drinking the water again! Adam my friend this one is absolutely the beginning of at the least a Novella keep it going please. 🙂
July 28th, 2012 at 7:46 AM
It will most likely end up being something longer, but it’ll take awhile as I already have multiple longer works in progress.
July 27th, 2012 at 11:18 PM
Aliens spiking our water? I didn’t see that coming either.
July 28th, 2012 at 7:47 AM
No one did. That’s why they all died.
July 28th, 2012 at 1:44 AM
Hey - It’s Kool-Aid Man! Oh no - It’s ALIENS!
Great post!
July 28th, 2012 at 7:49 AM
Wouldn’t that be something? An entire race of beings who look like the Kool-Aid man? Except they want to kill us. That’s a bit of a downer.
July 28th, 2012 at 2:01 AM
Oh dear…how gloomy. Glad I won’t be around during the Retribution and Revelation. How is that for a drunken rant? lol. You know where to find me.
July 28th, 2012 at 7:51 AM
Drunken rant, check. Thanks for stopping by. I’ll get to yours eventually. I’m a wee bit behind in my reading with being MIA on Friday, and by wee bit I mean WAY behind.

Looks like we had similar inspiration today. Nice one.

Similar Inspiration indeed. I rather enjoyed your mysterious silver-scaled beings. Thanks for reading, Sandra.
July 28th, 2012 at 9:23 AM
Unfortunately, it may not be aliens who spike our waters. Good story.
July 28th, 2012 at 8:14 PM
Hopefully we never have to find out which of us had the correct version.
July 28th, 2012 at 9:47 AM
The scariest thing about this story is that it’s plausible - and doesn’t even require intervention from Outside!
July 28th, 2012 at 8:15 PM
Absolutely right. I hope we never see the day, whether from outside or within.
July 28th, 2012 at 2:49 PM
This is lovely in its creepiness, scary in that it could be real. Love it!

I don’t even want to think about how easily something like this could be pulled off. Those are some statistics I’d rather not know. I’d probably never drink water again.
July 29th, 2012 at 10:23 AM
yes, I agree. there are things I avoid today out of “unnecessary” fear.
July 28th, 2012 at 4:16 PM
This would be so easy and not just for aliens. I liked the way you turned the usual “epic battle with the aliens (usually bugs of some sort)” on its head. After all, why would “they” not just do it the easy way, assuming of course, that “they” don’t drink water or can get rid of the poison.
July 28th, 2012 at 8:18 PM
The aliens attacking just never made sense to me. If they have the technology to bring them that far without us knowing, then certainly they could erradicate us in a far more sinister way than just blowing us all up.
